  • Jerry’s Artarama, 14 Imperial St., Providence

The Peace Postcard Initiative is a process using the power of individually created postcards focused on Peace, to spread the word about International Peace Day! On Saturday, September 8th at 1:00 PM, individuals will have the opportunity to learn how art can be used to call attention to important events like September 21st – The UN International Peace Day. This free afternoon workshop will offer the opportunity for anyone to design and create a card that will carry a message, through words and imagery, that one day has been set aside to focus on Peace. These postcards will be sent with the intention of asking individuals to focus on Peace during the day to raise awareness and make this day as meaningful as possible.

Many local, well-known Rhode Island creative’s have committed to supporting this educational project by making uniquely designed postcards as reminders to focus on International Peace Day. Artists and non-artists alike will be creating a “save this date” (9/21) International Peace Day art postcard at Jerry’s Artarama, Providence.  From 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM the public is invited to participate in a presentation about the history and power of Peace, One Day! and create a postcard carrying the message and images of peace.

Find out who Jeremy Gilley is! Learn how there was a 70% reduction in recorded violence in Afghanistan on International Peace Day.  Then spend time leaning how to craft a card that is a reminder of the power of spreading the idea that we can reduce violence in our communities and in the world.  Meet Susan Fox, who will be leading the workshop, along with a variety of Expressive and Creative Arts facilitators from all over New England, including Salve Regina University.  These artist facilitators will be supporting participants in this amazing creative process. There will be ART PLAY warm-ups at 1:00 PM and a short video on “Peace, One Day” at 1:30 PM. From 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM there will be time for developing and designing “save this date” postcards that will be ready to send out at the end of the session.  No art experience or background is required and all art materials will be supplied free of charge.

Ginny Fox, originator of the Peace Flag Project, will be making a special guest appearance supporting those creating messages of Peace.  She will share her process of bringing awareness to creating flags dedicated to the message of Peace that is an expansion of the celebrations of the United Nations International Day of Peace.

Ginny Fox developed the Peace Flag Project (PFP) and has been the primary organizer of the UN Peace Days in Providence.  For over ten years, the Month of Peace in Providence was initiated, planned and organized by her. (http://thepeaceflagproject.org/#)

Beginners and experienced dancers join the circle together with simple movements and singing of sacred chants from many faith traditions.

From the beginning of time, Music, Movement, Chanting, Song and Prayer have brought communities together — at times of celebration and as part of everyday life. Mayor Angel Taveras proclaims September 2012 the Month of Peace in Providence.

Mayor Taveras Recognizes Peace Flag Project and Declares September a Month of Peace in the City of Providence

Providence City News:  Friday, August 31 2012

Earlier today, Mayor Taveras signed a proclamation proclaiming September as a Month of Peace. The Peace Flag Project, a collaborative of community organizations and nonviolent advocates, is coordinating a series of events across Rhode Island throughout September to promote peace and nonviolence, including the annual Peace Walk during Saturday’s WaterFire. A full schedule of events can be found at the 2012 Month of Peace page.

The Month of Peace builds on the work inspired by the United Nations International Day of Peace. The Peace Flag Project is supporting peaceful events focused on local projects, organizations, performances and festivals. These events serve as an important reminder that Providence is a safe city with tight knit neighbors who are committed to reducing violence and improving public safety in every neighborhood.

A Peace Flag Project in California

Message: Hello Ladies/Gentlemen:

While cruising the internet, I discovered your website. I would like to share my story.

I am a teacher at a continuation high school in Napa, CA. My class is coordinating a school wide peace flag activity. The students and I have been cutting muslin, sewing top slip pockets, counting and distributing the blank clothes to each class. During their home room period, every student will design their flags. This project will culminate with all 250 flags coming together to be hung around our campus on Peace Day 2012.

This was all born out of a cloth donation from our beloved, retired school counselor who had cleaned out her closets over the summer and donated varous pieces of fabric to my arts class. To honor her and world peace, I had the idea to do this schoolwide project. When I mentioned it to my students, they unanimously agreed it had to be done!

In Peace, Michelle McMaster

AUREA performs in Pawtucket 08/26

This Saturday the lovely Aurea ensemble will be performing at Veterans Memorial Amphitheater in Pawtucket! Go to this amazing concert. This group is an honest treasure: they combine music and words in the most exquisite way!  The event is free and open to the public. There is a parking area across the street and in many cases, the amphitheater will be less than 2 miles from your dwelling, short enough for a nice evening walk or bike ride! However you plan to get there, just get there!

About AUREA

What happens when artists meet at the margins of their disciplines and push the boundaries back and forth? What happens is AUREA, a performance ensemble engaged in a joyous pursuit to investigate and invigorate the harmony of music and the spoken word.

Aurea takes its name from Catena Aurea Homeri, or the Golden Chain of Homer, a symbol of 18th century esoteric alchemy, which strove for the refinement of the human condition. That alchemy – combining disparate elements into a divine new element – defines every Aurea event.

Central to AUREA’s mission is the pairing of meaningful educational outreach with artistic themes, striving through imaginative concert programming and educational workshops to inspire audiences of varied backgrounds and ages. Through the medium of performance, interfacing music with the spoken word, AUREA seeks to unify the humanities and fine arts in dynamic accessible and engaging ways.

This season’s AUREA events are supported in part by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, Ocean State Charities, the City of Pawtucket, the Creative Arts Council at Brown University, Pawtucket Credit Union, the Friends of AUREA, and others.

More information about AUREA can be found at their website, http://www.aureaensemble.org/

September 2012 Month of Peace

We’re planning a full month of peace related events in Rhode Island in celebration of the UN International Day of Peace. After celebrating Peace Day for six years, the Peace Flag Project expanded its events to one month in 2010.

First Post

Inner Peace is a personal quest for peace, and World Peace is the global experience of peace. While we at The Peace Flag Project(PFP) advocate for the individual experience of peace, and hold great hope for World Peace, our Mission is to create peace in the space in between: the space where we live our every day lives. Our goal is peaceful relationships on all levels. Our focus is on how we live with our families, friends, and community members; what kind of citizens, coworkers and colleagues we are; and, how we educate our children and work for social justice. It’s about being able to live a healthy life with meaningful work, good housing and safe neighborhoods. It’s about affirming our need for artistic expression and appreciation for culture in all its diversity. It’s about how we live on this planet and use its resources. It’s about appreciating the connection of all life physically and spiritually.

Our work is to foster peace in our ordinary lives. We do this in three ways:
