The Peace Postcard Initiative is a process using the power of individually created postcards focused on Peace, to spread the word about International Peace Day! On Saturday, September 8th at 1:00 PM, individuals will have the opportunity to learn how art can be used to call attention to important events like September 21st – The UN International Peace Day. This free afternoon workshop will offer the opportunity for anyone to design and create a card that will carry a message, through words and imagery, that one day has been set aside to focus on Peace. These postcards will be sent with the intention of asking individuals to focus on Peace during the day to raise awareness and make this day as meaningful as possible.

Many local, well-known Rhode Island creative’s have committed to supporting this educational project by making uniquely designed postcards as reminders to focus on International Peace Day. Artists and non-artists alike will be creating a “save this date” (9/21) International Peace Day art postcard at Jerry’s Artarama, Providence.  From 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM the public is invited to participate in a presentation about the history and power of Peace, One Day! and create a postcard carrying the message and images of peace.

Find out who Jeremy Gilley is! Learn how there was a 70% reduction in recorded violence in Afghanistan on International Peace Day.  Then spend time leaning how to craft a card that is a reminder of the power of spreading the idea that we can reduce violence in our communities and in the world.  Meet Susan Fox, who will be leading the workshop, along with a variety of Expressive and Creative Arts facilitators from all over New England, including Salve Regina University.  These artist facilitators will be supporting participants in this amazing creative process. There will be ART PLAY warm-ups at 1:00 PM and a short video on “Peace, One Day” at 1:30 PM. From 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM there will be time for developing and designing “save this date” postcards that will be ready to send out at the end of the session.  No art experience or background is required and all art materials will be supplied free of charge.

Ginny Fox, originator of the Peace Flag Project, will be making a special guest appearance supporting those creating messages of Peace.  She will share her process of bringing awareness to creating flags dedicated to the message of Peace that is an expansion of the celebrations of the United Nations International Day of Peace.

Ginny Fox developed the Peace Flag Project (PFP) and has been the primary organizer of the UN Peace Days in Providence.  For over ten years, the Month of Peace in Providence was initiated, planned and organized by her. (http://thepeaceflagproject.org/#)
